 EDITORIAL

Over the last couple of years, I’ve become more fascinated with editorial photography. Images that take your breath away; images that stir your soul for reasons you can’t explain. A special fact about my family is that my mom is also a career photographer and those soul-stirring images I just mentioned… yeah, that’s the kind she creates. She is a master in those hauntingly beautiful, highly artistic conceptual images you see in art galleries in Europe. It was incredible to grow up under wing and witness her artistic evolution as she was building her business and raising three kids.

I’ve experienced my own evolution in photography after my younger brother got drafted to play football for the Detroit Lions in 2022. I suddenly found myself in the sports media space photographing my brother for brands, shooting and editing training videos, curating images for his social media. It has been an unexpected, extremely welcomed new pathway for growth.

I’ve come to discover that my interest in editorial photography actually has a place in sports. Professional athletes are already accustom to having their photo taken whether it’s on the field doing their jobs, in the gym during a training sessions, or out in public smiling for selfies with fans. But creating a space for an athlete to be themselves without their sport—no jersey, no helmet—is fascinating to me. And once in a while, my brother likes to gel his hair, throw on a suit, and take to the streets to see what we can create.

Below is a collection we created in our hometown where we grew up. The vibes we wanted were vintage GQ meets Detroit/hometown grit… with a little Shinola flair. But most importantly, we wanted it to feel like a glimpse of the person he was becoming. That’s really just the long way of saying that I believe editorial photography should tell a story.
